Restoration of Vardznil HPP Relay Protection System

Project Description

At the Vardznil HPP, a critical malfunction was detected in the relay protection system of the 75 MW generator, which necessitated the replacement of a Siemens SIPROTEC 4 series single relay device. To restore protective functions, the project involved dismantling the existing device and fully engineering and implementing a new one — including inputting technical parameters, testing, integration with the existing SCADA system, and deployment on the visualization platform.

Technologies used:

  • Siemens SIPROTEC 4 series microprocessor relay module
  • DIGSI 4 configuration software
  • Communication standards: IEC 61850, RS485, and analog layers

Safety component:

The restored protection system provides prompt and accurate response to generator malfunctions, significantly reducing the risk of technical failures and enhancing the electrical reliability of the facility.

The work performed included:

  • Dismantling of the damaged relay device
  • Integration of the new device into the generator protection system
  • Functional configuration and individual parameter setting
  • Conducting real and simulated testing cycles
